Introduction

Scientific progress and a shift in the relationship between science and society are creating new challenges for the scientific community. Today, research endeavors are larger in scale, and more complex and expensive than ever before, resulting in completely new research environments and relationships among researchers. The rapidly increasing number of trained researchers and exciting research opportunities has produced a competitive pressure that the research system and individual scientists have never faced before. The responsible and ethical conduct of research in this environment has become a prominent issue and is much more closely monitored and regulated than in the past.

Academia Sinica, the highest research institution in Taiwan, is committed to maintaining the highest ethical standards both within the institution and across the broader community in which it functions. As part of efforts to attain this goal, the International Affairs Office (IAO) of Academia Sinica has taken the initiative to set up this website. We hope to provide our faculty, staff and students with information pertaining to policies and regulations surrounding the issue of the responsible and ethical conduct of research. The website is intended to be not only a collection of information but also serve as a forum for discussion and self-education. Education for younger scientists is the emphasis of this website. It is hoped that the mentors/advisors at Academia Sinica may use this website to sensitize postdoctoral scholars and students to ethical issues at the beginning stages of their careers, paving the way for them to become scientists of integrity in the future.

We hope users find this website useful. Suggestions to improve the website are always welcome.
