Academia Sinica Lecture Series to Invite Quantum Physicist Dr. John Martinis to Speak on Quantum Computers and Quantum Supremacy

Date: 2023-04-21

The American physicist Dr. John Martinis has been invited as the Academia Sinica Lecturer for the 2023 Academia Sinica Lecture Series to deliver a lecture entitled “Quantum Computers and Quantum Supremacy.” The lecture will take place at the International Conference Hall (3F) of the Humanities and Social Sciences Building on April 26, 2023. Members of the media and the public are welcome to attend.

Dr. Martinis is currently a Professor of physics in the Department of Physics at the University of California, Santa Barbara. He did pioneering experiments involving superconducting qubits in the 1980s and focused on quantum computation since the late 1990s. From 2014 to 2020 he worked at Google to build a quantum computer which culminated in the quantum supremacy experiment in 2019. With 53 qubits, the Sycamore processor at Google takes only 200 seconds to run a quantum circuit a million times – something that would take a state-of-the-art classical supercomputer approximately 10,000 years to run.

In recognition of his outstanding contributions to low temperature physics and quantum technology, Dr. Martinis was awarded the Fritz London Memorial Prize in 2014 and the John Stewart Bell Prize in 2021. In the 2023 Academia Sinica Lecture Series, Dr. Martinis will explain the basic concepts behind the exponential power of this technology and how to build a quantum computer using superconductors. He will also talk about future applications of quantum algorithms and potential developments over the next decade.

Established in 2009, the Academia Sinica Lecture Series features prominent scholars from across the world as speakers to stimulate discussions and inspire scientific research. Invitation as an Academia Sinica Lecturer is an honor bestowed on Nobel Laureates and scholars of the same caliber.
